At DFCC we have begun focusing a lot on the environments our programs occur in. This encompasses everything from printed and visual design pieces that we now have a graphic designer on staff to do, to substantially upgrading our lighting, video and sound systems. We have not arrived at all and we still have much to improve on but we are moving in the right direction.
There are always the critics who question if improvements like these are necessary. I believe they are and I believe if were to think like an unchurched person these design details become even more important.
I just came across this post from Ben Arment that speaks about an issue of Fast Company Magazine which specifically speak about design. It is good to read and applicable to anyone in church leadership.
